Gordon's First Blackpool Convention Thoughts:
My first Blackpool Convention was a huge surprise as I thought it would be a nice, relaxing weekend with some magic mates (the infamous Magic Bloggers). I have now returned absolutely knackered and a lot poorer. From 8.00 at breakfast until 3.30 in the morning the Magic Bloggers were relentless in their quest to update the faithful members of their blog and at the Gala show the tweeting was constant.
The three day programme was very busy with a lot of events overlapping so it was impossible to see everything and eat properly. I am not a great fan of card magic, so many of the lectures didn't really appeal, although I did pop into a couple for a short time. Of the lecture I did see in full, Greg Wilson and the UK Children's Competition stood out for me, I tried to find the David Ginn lecture but it wasn't signposted and then the Dealer's Halls beckoned me in like an Aladdin’s Cave. Mind you the dealer’s areas were busy if you got there at the wrong time i.e. when no card magic lectures were on. With the tight scheduling it would have been nice to have had a coffee or snack that didn’t take 25 mins to queue for, luckily Greggs is across the road.
I can only imagine how much organisation it takes to put on a convention like this with three evening shows as well, my hat comes off to you Blackpool Magic Club.
Thank you to my Magic Bloggers for an excellent weekend and finally, I would like to apologise to the young man I was showing ‘Crazy Man’s Handcuffs’ to in the Ruskin, the next time I saw him was on stage with his Scorpion illusion – I don’t think he was very impressed but he was polite, at least it wasn’t a card trick!

Tonight's compere was John Martin, very funny guy, loads of super gags.
Many thanks to all the backstage guys especially Juan, Tony, Graham & Mark. Always very slick.
In summary good but long, if Aaron hadn't of walked the auditorium TWICE we'd have been out by 10:30.

Greg Wilson Lecture
Greg started of the lecture with a multi phase coin on shoulder routine. Really quick and high impact. Brilliant!
The second trick he performed was a trick called "Pointless", were the point of a pen transports from one end to the other. Visually great.
Next was a really cool prediction trick which was, someone named a number and Greg pulled out some coins from his pocket and the total value of the coins matched the names number.
Greg then performed a visual multi colour changing bill which could be handed out.
Some impromptu coin stuff was next, including a falling coin production and a great pitch vanish. He stole the guys watch 3 times, never seen it done so quickly!
Greg then borrowed a ring and stretched it using an interesting gimmick.
After that he did a crazy man's handcuffs with a broken tooth pick and restored it in the end.
Onto some card magic with some spin out revelations including catching it in his mouth.
Greg then showed us a cool alternative way of doing the muscle pass.
After that Greg did a nice quick silverware routine. Where forks, spoons and knifes swithed places.
End of review and score to follow.

Axel Hacklau
UPDATE: I'm very excited, I now have an Axel moustache lollipop! :) Just met and chatted with him at the stand, a genuinely nice guy.

British Magical Championship
The cups and balls was next, unfortunately, there was noting new here. A classic routine. With a fruity finish. 6/10.
Sam Fitton: Sam brought 2 spectators on stage and started by producing some cards in a flash. 2 cards were then selected, and were transported from hand to hand. Sam went straight into the ambitious card routine, an omni deck made an appearance. Then Sam had a multi phase card to wallet routine, which went into a torn a restored cornered card, where the corner was on the watch that was handed out at the beginning to keep track of time. 7/10.
Jason Rea: Jason Rea, looked very smart! Always a bonus! A chop cup started his routine. Nothing new, again with a fruity finish! Jason then started a multi phase ace routine which led into a sandwiched card. Jason then had another card routine with a card to wallet then omni deck. 6/10.
Will Gray: started with torn and restored string but with a helium ballon (A nice touch). Will started with his goldfish glass production from the jacket sleeve. Will then went onto a signed card (3H) sandwich effect which went into a red 3 pool ball to wallet. Will ended with the 3H reversed in a sealed card box. 7.5/10
Chris Stevenson: Chris started with a coin purse. Chris produced and vanished coins. Then produced a piece of rope. A ring and rope routine was next, various classic rope effects then followed. Chris then performed a card trick which started with a classic force repeated numerous times, it was a multiple selection card trick, including a pool ball. A funny routine with some good lines and sleight of hand. 8/10
Shaun McCree: Shaun started with a signed card trick. The Shaun brought out 8 decks of cards, 3 glasses, and a painting. The 2 spectators picked one deck from the 8 decks. The painting prediction matched all that was selected and performed with the cards. 7/10
Stephen Ablett: Stephen started with a coin production and vanishes. Stephen then performed some metal bending, technically well performed. Up next was a story routine using Detective Jack Spade. Next was a heart shaped ring and silk routine. 5/10
On the whole a disappointing competition noting really new in any of the acts! None of these acts would place a few years ago!
And the winners are:
1st: Chris Stevenson
2nd: Will Gray
3rd: Shaun McCree

Magic from the USA & Canada
Magic Castle magician of the year
Quick change, and cd manipulation. Started slowly with some odd pauses, but got better as it went along.
Stu: 7 Geoff: 7 Matt: 6 Max: 7 Gordie: 7
2. Charlie Frye & Co.
The awesomeness
Amazing as always, he makes the impossible look easy. He must practice 24 hours a day.
Stu: 10 Geoff: 10 Matt: 9 Max: 9 Gordie: 9
3. Dirk Losander
Uplifting magic
Dancing cane, bubbles, floating table.
Stu: 6 Geoff: 7 Matt: 6 Max: 5 Gordie: 8
4. Andost
Championship winner
Quite a nice act with manipulation, very nice use of lights and well synchronised to music.
Stu: 7 Geoff: 6 Matt: 5 Max: 4 Gordie: 7
5. Chris Hart
Simply a stage hand
An act of two halves, one good, one not so. It started with a ribbon routine and some card manips. The torn and restored music sheet set to music was great. The second half was a zombie routine using a hand, went on a little long for me.
Stu: 6 Geoff: 6 Matt: 5 Max: 5 Gordie: 6
6. The Evasons
Mentalists & Magic
Impressive but far too long. Old fashioned mind reading act.
Stu: 5 Geoff: 5 Matt: 4 Max: 7 Gordie: 8
7. Richard Forget
Canadian magician of the year
Nice act featuring manipulation with drum sticks and more, finally producing a drum kit and a lady.
Stu: 6 Geoff: 7 Matt: 8 Max: 8 Gordie: 7
8. Jason Latimer
As seen on TV
First he performed his superb cups and balls routine.
Jason then performed the water act as featured on the BBCs The Magicians, he also got George Samson to help out again.
Stu: 7 Geoff: 7 Matt: 7 Max: 10 Gordie: 8
An additional act for the evening was yesterday's star Kim Tae Won, I'm now not sure why I only gave him a 9 yesterday, or was it the extra 24 hours practice added an extra point :) 10/10 tonight. This gent will tour the world with this act, superb.
Compare was Jimmy Tamley a good good and funny vent. Although they do seem to be the same gags as last year.
Jason Latimer Lecture
Jason started his lecture by showing a video of an illusion he created for Buick an illusion where 12 smoke machines. The video showed all the steps he used in the planning process to make the car appear!
Next up was another video, this time of Jason and George Sampson on The Magicians. Jason made 5 volunteers, sat them down on a moving truck and managed to teleport them to the moving truck 10 meters in front!
Jason then took numerous questions from the audience!
Overall a good lecture, it's good to have lectures that about planning magic and ideas rather than just full of tricks! However a couple of tricks would have gone down well!

International Close Up Session 2 & The Wayne Dobson & Friends Show
The show was compared by Steve Evans in a proper manner giving all the performers star treatment introductions and not trying to steal the show for himself and not trying to steal the show for himself.
Chad long was first up a personal favourite of ours, smart tricks, great patter and one liners, he used coins, chewing gum, a great gag with a bag of junk, 4 ace sequences absolutely brilliant start to the show.
Andy Nyman: Clever presentations of his signature effects, lots of assistants participating in his act, good stuff.
Ponta the smith: All done in silence to music, he started with novel coin in glass routine, 4 ace effect followed by matrix, ring on a string was his next offering, and more coin effects, coins across, etc.
Ian Barradell: Of Tenyo fame, a 3 card effect to begin with, in penetration mode, ring on a rope, card locations, very dramatic and entertaining, first class diary trick, and card to wallet with a novel storyline. This guy is going places.
Unfortunately David Roth did not appear, surprise surprise Greg Wilson, stepped off the plane and was with us within an hour and a half. He opened with fancy stuff with cards, great card locations, typically Greg, quick sure fire mysterious, fork and spoon game, Greg plays with audience and the kicker is a production of a knife. He finished his act with the Rubiks cube, really effective trick, brilliant! At the end of the routine he presented the cube as a gift to one of his helpers!
Video review of Wayne Dobson & Friends:
Andy Nyman Lecture
Can you cut to 12 cards Andy Nyman can, (apparently).
Andy borrowed 3 items from spectators a coin, watch and wallet.
He asked for the spectators to cut 12 cards from the top of the deck.
Each of the spectators cut to the card saying coin, watch and wallet, the rest of the cards were blank! A simple but effective and strong trick!
Andy then got 9 spectators on stage (one of which had a birthday today) and gave each of them an envelope with a number in. These related to 9 gift bags with prizes! Surprise surprise Jerome the birthday boy got the main teddy bear prize!
A pile of cards, with words on was then brought to the table! 2 spectators pick a card from the pile. Andy then on a pad writes down what he think the first card is, boom he is correct, brings out a dictionary and claims to know what page number the selected word is on. For the second selected card Andy writes down what he thinks the word is... But then when he turns the pad over it reveals a number, this number then actually relates to the dictionary when the select card/word warlock is.
Andy asks quick fire questions to a spectator... Like the what you put in a toaster... Toast questions. He then asks a spectator to quickly point to one and it is the only red card in the deck. Rough and smooth!
Boo or Go Crazy:
A lady is asked to think of a number from a card in a deck. To point to someone else, have a colour selected, to point to someone else, have suite selected. In this case the 10 of diamonds. The only one to have Go Crazy on the back, the rest have Boo! And boo would of known it! The 10 of diamonds was the "only" card with Go Crazy on the back.
An interesting lecture to watch, however I thought all of the effects were a bit basic I would have liked something a bit more advanced.
7/10 - Matt
Michael Weber Lecture
The lecture started of with a really clean vanishing rubber band that appeared on a spectators seat. He just rubbed the band and it was gone. Visual!
He then did a super clean handling of acaan with a borrowed deck from the crowd. WOW
Michael then performed a great ring on stick, were a borrowed ring penetrated onto a metal stick multiple times. He also did a nice gag were he snapped the stone of the band and put it back on.
Next Michael taught us an ingenious deck stack system which was so quick to learn. Everyone learnt the stack in just a few mins.
Michael then shared a nice idea about making a deck look sealed, so you set up the deck previously and give the illusion of opening a new deck.
Onto the next trick which was called "Dealing with lifes little troubles", which was a concept about the little annoying things that happen in everyday life and how as magicians we have an advantage and using magic we can fix them.
Overall I thought the lecture was full of great information and inspiring tricks.
7/10
- Max Curd (Brighton Magician)
The UK Childrens Entertainers National Championships & Charlie Frye Lecture
Virrvarr: A silent act with a very slow start, the best part was when a spectator threw a ball back and threw it straight into the basket! Many silks and ended with umbrellas. 5/10.
Craig Petty: With 2 helpers. 3 stage illusions. 6/10.
David Ginn: A lot effects with silks and streamers, a notable one where he was miss calling the colours with 2 young helpers. 7/10.
Andy Clockwise: A very confident and polished performance. He performed 2 magic effects, and then some puppet work. 8/10.
Mr Wand: His puppet was Cheeko the Chicken, he needs his own material. 6/10.
Stu Di Doo: With a very funny routine with a monkey puppet called Cheeko. 7/10.
Compared superbly by Terry Herbert.
Charlie Frye
We've seen Charlie on a number of occasions! Go if you have never seen him!
Also if you catch him in the bar/Ruskin ask to see his any card at any number! It's excellent!
Matt
Stu's review...
Although I have seen Charlie's lecture a couple of times over the years it's still something of awe and wonder that can't be missed. The man is so talented it inspires me everything I see him perform. Here's a rough list of what he performed.
thumbtip card balance, billard balls, glue gag, daemon shrimp, nail file, coins, karate coin, idiot savant, coin to eye, coins across, vanishing coin, folding coin in thumbtip, vanishing finger, balloon gag, vanishing comb, missing (Alan Wong), linking bands, circle fan, air pass, 8 ball juggling and plate juggling.
Danny Cole Lecture
Review to follow!
Stage magician of the year twice at the magic castle.
Coat hanger illusion a la the linking rings.
Coin trick went wrong to start with no spare gimmicks.
Interesting card trick next up, card to pocket and a transposition. Clever explanation.
Original and magical was his theme throughout danny's lecture and very informative: a lot of time spent talking theory how to develop a trick.
Can you show me a trick?
Was his next trick. Which he demonstrated. He then showed us a miniature mirror for card location. His sales pitch came next, a very pleasant man with a lot of charisma and personality looking forward to his stage show.

Chad Long Lecture
The lecture started of with a great gag that looked like high speed sewing and then did a Chad Long version* of the razor blade swallowing trick but with spaghetti lol.
Then he did a really cool vanishing card which involved him eating the card quarter by quarter.
Then there was a cramp moment.
After a swift recovery he performed a clever mathematical* double lift change routine.
Chad then performed his "Flash" trick, if you haven't seen it yet check it out. Great kicker at the end.
He then did a four coin production next which he started of with a crazy four coin palm/holdout, but there was a OMG moment and it fooled most of the magicians in the room.
Then onto as sweet card routine using the old "look in my...." gaffed cards.
Continuing with cards Chad did a "scratch card" themed Chicago opener card routine. Really good thinking again by Chad!
Next was something different, it was a book test with a theasaurus and a book with no cover so all the pages were loose and shuffled up. Really nice fair and powerful trick. Check it out its called "Spine-less"
Last trick was a gag with a spray can and the ball bearing feel out of the bottom and there was no shaking sound.
Overall I thought it was a great lecture, loads of great material was shown and a massive bargain bundle at the end.

Awesome act featuring projected graphics combined with near perfect timing to produce a very clever and original act. I loved this!
Stu: 10 Geoff: 8 Matt: 10 Max: 10 Gordie: 8

quite a nice piece of theatre, lots of effects producing paper windmills. more theatre than magic for me.

4. Kim Tae Won - manipulation standing ovation
oh my god! this fella was incredible. amazing manipulations including a torn and visibly restored card. also featured an incredible section where he produced different coloured fans of cards colour by colour, very impressive which warranted a well deserved standing ovation.

Part 2.
5. Lee Hun - cans & t-shirts
very orginal act, including appearing cans, costume changes, and t-shirts that changed colour. nice (he'd have got a better score if he hadn't of use Justin Beiber music).

8. Yu Ho Jin - quick change
when it was announced this guy was the godfather of their country's magic I was expecting more. the costume changes were good, but after seeing david & dania a few times I guess we've been spoilt.

International Close Up Session 1 & Matthias Rauch Lecture
Matthias Rauch Lecture
This was Matthias's First international lecture.
He started off with some manipulation with some balls and a lemon.
Timed and themed really well with the lemony music.
Matthias then explained how to transform 2 balls to 4 along with revealing a few other ball manipulation moves.
Mathias went on to demonstrate a card manipulation move, where you can produce a playing card from your hands in a diamond shape!
Pow there was a cd, Matthias went on to demonstrate how in the motion for looking for an item you can steal another! In this case, in the motion of looking for a silk he stole and produced a cd.
Mathias then got everyone in the pavilion on their feet and showed everyone how to vanish a coin by casually dropping a coin in your pocket! Doing this in clever and unsuspecting way.
Matt then showed us a mick take on every typical street magicians promo!
It was very funny to watch and was spot on to most promos I've seen for magicians between the ages 10-30 that say they are the UK's best street magician!
Before finishing Matthias then went on to have a few quick cheeky comments about David Blaine and Criss Angel. This is something I guess you had to have seen.
A very informative lecture with lots of information on performance techniques.

Thursday Round Up
We left Sussex at about 9:30am and headed on our way to Blackpool with Stuart driving in his beast of a people carrier (With enough room in the back for a Houdini (Who?) milk can escape). In the front was Stuart, Gordon (First time Blackpooler) myself and Max in the back. Geoff was meeting us there!
Half way into the journey 3 police cars covered all 3 lanes of the motorway and drastically slowed down to about 15 miles an hour. 2 minutes later a Mazda passed us at speed with a police car in hot pursuit. The reckless driving continued until the police managed to pull the car over. It was like something out of a film car chase!
We arrived at about 4pm and checked into our hotel rooms. Then went for a stroll in Blackpool. In the arcade we had a quick game of camel derby! This is where some lady won 3 times in a row. I dread to think how many friends and relatives have received a stuffed meerkat as a present from this derby diva!
On the way back we thought it was about time to check into the Ruskin to see what was "going down" Me and Max had a great chat with FISM Winner and the star of 'The Magicians' - Jason Latimer. A very nice guy who defiantly lives magic. Which is what you have to do to be one of the best! And Jason really is - one of the best!
Me and Max then caught up with Stuart, Geoff, Gordon, and the rest of the guys at Truffles Steak restaurant! Good food and great company!
It was then time to head back to the hotel for an early night for all the action and excitement for the start of Blackpool Magic Convention 2012.
See you tomorrow,
Matt
